Sarees in India : different zones


When we talk about shopping that too in India....Few quotations or statements cannot describe the pedestal that India holds in the world map because of its colourful and unique culture. I must say unlike other countries India has so many different things to offer everyone, incredibly rich in culture and heritage. If we talk of food due to weather and soil difference  we have so many types of food and ingredients. When we talk about garments designs/trends, India has vast range to offer based on different tastes, cultures and traditions.

From Kashmir to Kanyakumari....no state offer same thing, every state has one or the other unique thing to offer....

  • if you go to Kashmir you can best quality pashmina shawla and dry fruits

  • Punjab is famous for phulkari work on suits and dupattas


  • In Delhi you can get different types of sequinned embroidery, semi- precious stones embroidery, mirror work, zari work, hand paints...



  • Meghalaya you can get Muga or the golden silk fibre, its more a display of ethnicity of the tribes like jantias/Garos
  • Nagaland again you may get different kind of shawls , not pashmina though

  • Moving toward Bengal you will get sarees, usually cotton, known for its work called dhakai jamdani, kantha work, tant (hand woven), tangail (lotus or lamp pattern)

  • Madhya Pardesh 
shows multiplicity in various aspects  
as itself is famous for chanderi sarees 
and maheshwari sarees while 
  • Indore and Ujjain for bandhej

  • In Maharashtra you will get Nauvari sarees which are in cotton though silk tops the list...also paithnai sarees (aurangabad) which happen to be treaseured  creation of Maharashtra

  • Rajasthan is famous for world known colourful lehriya and bandhej sarees and suits
Now comes the south of India- Andhra Pradesh, Kerala , Tamil Nadu, Karnataka renowned for there silk and cotton sarees.

  • Karnataka if known for Regal sarees, which happen to be their traditional costumes

  • Mysore and Bengaluru are epicentre for silk industries

  • Kerala you will get there traditional saree which is in offwhite colour with golden zari border, which is getting more and more famous these days

  • Kancheepuram is famous for kanjeevaram silk sarees

  • Pochampally (Andhra Pradesh) famous for both cotton and silk sarees with traditional ikat work . Venatgari, the sarees with the name of the city only are perfect for summers and known for beautiful jewel like designs.
Certain India state costumes are are almost worn in all parts of the country in different styles like Salwar suits.
